In one of the American conference reports, a complaint was raised in connection with the lubricators for the rear brake mechanism, it being suggested that these were not required, and that no trouble was experienced as regards the shortage of lubrication for these parts on cars in the states.

I cannot quite agree with this as regards cars for service in this country, or in Europe, and we are continually having cars coming in for repair or ordinary attention on which the brakes have become defective owing to the actuating shafts on the rear axle seizing up in their bushes.

This point I have complained about on previous occasions, and I take this opportunity of again recommending that still improved lubrication if possible should be arranged for the back axle brake mechanism, as I consider the present means inadequate.

Apart from the lubrication, one of the chief troubles experienced with the present brake mechanism is that the locking mechanism is coked with road dirt etc., and on a number of cars, the small pins used for the bayonet fitting job have been sheared off.
