RE BATTERY CHARGING TO MODIFIED CHARACTERISTIC
OF V = 16 - .15 A.{Mr Adams}

Tests on charging to a modified characteristic of V = 16 - .15 A were carried out on a standard P & R RR11-3 battery.

The battery was first charged at a continuous current of 6 amperes for approx. 16 hours, when the density (1270) and voltage (15.9) had remained constant for a few hours.

On low rate discharge through a constant external resistance of 1.80 ohms, 84.5 ampere-hours were obtained.

The battery was then charged to the modified characteristic as stated above.

The charge commenced at 22 amperes 12.7 volts, and tapered down to finally 3 amperes in about 10 hours. The maximum sustained P.D. was 15.5. It was then discharged as before and 82.4 ampere-hours were obtained. This process was repeated three times and each discharge shewed a slight improvement, as will be seen by the curves, which tends to show that repeated charging to this characteristic does not reduce its capacity.

As a proof a further discharge was taken after having being charged at a continuous current of 6 amperes and 84.0 ampere-hours were obtained. By the above results it appears that a battery can be fully charged to this characteristic although it does not reach such a high P.D. as when charged at a continuous current.
