Hotel de France. Chateauroux, Indre, France. March 31st 1926. To "Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}" From G.T.H. 10 G3 Chassis. I arrived in Parris on Sunday evening and took over the car on monday morning from Mr Rowbottom. I had a run out on the Car before the steering column was changed, as suggested. Col. Hawkins and Mr Parsons also tried the Car. The jobs were completed yesterday afternoon and we arrived here this evening. The steering column is not so steady now at low speeds and on bad roads. On rough roads there is considerable movement. Our impression of the steering on the run down here is, on good roads at low and high speeds the steering is very steady there are no signs of wobble up to 70 m.p.h. At median speeds it feels slightly heavy when cornering. On rough roads at low speeds there is a feeling of a wobble but it does not develop. At high speeds there are a series of shocks felt; these are a combination of the steering column whipping and the oscillation of the wheel (steering), so do not consider that it is as good as the phantom steering. The engine seems very good for power but detonates rather badly on picking up. The brakes are good front incline to thump. The change speed lever rattles sideways when in top gear at high speeds. The rear springs of the car is too flexible and requires more damping. The front axles very steady. We are making a general examination tomorrow before starting on the ten thousand miles. The tyres have arrived. G.T.Hancock. | ||
