Report from Hurst on Chassis 2301. X.2/B

May 6th. The brakes are working extremely well and very efficient. There is no oil getting on shoe although there has been a little run out of the overflow pipe. There is very little springyness of the actuation mechanism. I have found it an advantage to remove the spring which pulls the pedal back as it makes it too heavy to hold on for any length of time, and the springs on the brakes seem quite sufficient. I find that it is only necessary to have about ½" of movement on the actuating levers to get the best results now that the shoes are properly bedding.

" 13th. Very efficient, very little springyness in actuation mechanism. There is no oil reached the brake shoes up to the present. In very wet weather the mud splashes between the aluminium dust shield and the large brake drum and causes an awful screeching grinding sound.

" 20th. Wearing very well, no oil getting on to brake shoes. Very efficient and giving no trouble. Minimum clearance ½" from lever to stop on back axle.

" 26th. Very efficient no oil reaching brake shoes. Very little springyness in actuation mechanism. I think the wear taking place on these roads is about 1 notch of adjustment per 1500 miles.

June 2nd. Very efficient, very little springyness in actuation mechanism. No oil has reached shoes up to the present. With regard to adjustment and clearance, it is very important that when making fitters adjustment at the works that both sides, i.e. near and off side are given exactly the same amount of clearance which should be if the shoes are bedding properly ½" movement on the lever measuring from the stop if this is not done; when the drivers adjustment is made one wheel will be clear and the other rubbing the drum as it gives one an extra sense of safety to keep these brakes properly adjusted up close. Neither 2301 or 2300 brakes were adjusted both sides alike.
