re. NOISY BODIES.

With reference to your BJ14/H8.12.22 and memo from L.H.s.{Lord Herbert Scott - Chair} reference LHS{Lord Herbert Scott}4/EBN11.12.22.

We entirely agree with your memo BJ14/H8.12.22 - these are our own views on this matter, and we wrote to Mr. Oldham as follows:- on Nov. 24 1/2

"A further point to which we shall be glad if you will give your consideration, is that we are afraid that the tremendous booming set up by these bodies will mask any other chassis noises, and defeat the object for which these bodies are being made. The booming of these bodies is very much worse than any customers covered body we have ever tried, and although we understand that these bodies should be made with a view to amplifying any chassis noises, we feel that unless the booming is considerably reduced, when trying chassis with these covered bodies we shall only hear the booming and that this will drown any chassis noises which are present".

to which Mr. Oldham replied as follows:- on Nov. 24 1/2

"We are sorry to learn that the bodies "boom". The importance of absence from booming was pointed out to the Coachbuilders before the bodies were built, and on receipt of your memo referred to above, we at once informed them of what you say".

As a result of the above a joint visit was paid to Messrs. Windovers by Mr. Maddocks and Mr. Oldham, and we attach herewith copy of Mr. Maddocks' report issued on his return.

As pointed out by you, we do not expect or require these test bodies to be of such construction that they minimise chassis noises. The booming of the bodies, however, is so pronounced that it masks all other noises, and consequently defeats the object for which these bodies are being supplied.
