We have been carrying out tests on an experimental car with an air silencer on 25 HP. carburetter similar to what has been fitted to Phantom ll. In order to fit the silencer to the carburetter it is necessary to modify the existing carburetter so that it has a single air inlet. Carburetters of this design are already being made and are fitted as standard to 25 HP. tank engine units. With the carburetter as fitted to the tank fitted with an air silencer there is a considerable reduction in noise from the engine, which would be greatly appreciated by customers. We are now having to order up further 25 HP. material and we are issuing a Standardisation Sheet for the carburetter and silencer. There is nothing in this arrangement which demands any long endurance tests. The material which it is now proposed to order will not be delivered to customers in the form of complete cars until about June or July. By this time we expect to have a Phantom ll fitted with air silencer and also aero engine and a report so that it is necessary for us to anticipate the requirements for the 25 HP. Air silencers to carburetters are so effective and so cheap that it will not be long before any car which is not fitted with one of these will be considered out of date.
