Dear Sirs,

The type 72 mm locknut and hub with badly damaged threads taken from your Experimental Department by Mr. Jukes, have now been carefully examined. The damaged threads of each member were parted off and the portions left were found to be correct to gauge. The thread forms were projected and showed a satisfactory outline. The brinell hardness of both the hub and nut was found to be 170 to 180, and the Carbon contents have been determined as .39% and 42%, which are within the specified limits.

No definite explanation of the damage has been arrived at, but it is observed that the interior of the nut is plated and it follows that there would be a heavier deposit on the first threads. It is possible that when the locknut was hammered up a portion of the deposit became detached and caused the galling. The fact that more threads on the hub are damaged than on the locknut is con-
