H.C.C. (crossed out) C. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. to PN.{Mr Northey} C. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. to JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} YC.717. (D)16/7/31 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}1/C/15.7.31. Re Chassis No. GOS 59. W.S. Verrell, Esq. With reference to your 018/010.7.31. and PN{Mr Northey}14/WT13.7.31. I have to-day with JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} visited Mr. Verrell at Southend with his car and Trials car, GLR 59. GOS 59. (Verrell) is fitted with standard springs and shock absorbers, whereas GLR. 59. (Trials) has low rated springs and shock absorbers to suit. In comparing the two cars on our way to Southend along the Southend by-pass road (a very uneven surface road and under contention for poor springing). I was certainly impressed with the good riding of GLR. 59. compared with GOS 59. For riding on the back seat, even at speed, GOS 59. was harsh and pitched badly, whereas GLR 59, although it has plenty of movement, did not pitch and was much smoother in action. Also in the driving seat of GLR 59. although the steering is inclined to joggle and the front jellyin slightly (GOS 59. is better in this respect) the car was quite controlable and caused no anxiety in this respect. In my opinion GLR 59. springing is better than that of Experimental car, IS 84, on any occasion I have tried it at the Works. Mr. Verrell tried both these cars with Mr. Berwick of Woodyatt Motors (the agents). We considered GLR 59. an improvement and after making several trials (only concerned with rear seat riding) over various types of roads and at various speeds, he expressed entire satisfaction with the springing of GLR 59. and if his car was sprung to give similar results he would be quite satisfied. Mr. Berwick was not very helpful on this job. He was somewhat sore with us as I explained to PN.{Mr Northey} on the telephone, but he finally was convinced the springing was much better on GLR 59. Although we might improve GOS 59. by shock absorber adjustment to reduce the pitching, I am sure we should never get the results we get on GLR 59., and being purely a back seat passenger and carrying varying loads, the fitting of the low rated springs is the best cure. Action is now being taken by JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} to obtain suitable springs and shock absorbers from Works. Will you please confirm, it is essential that similar springs and shock absorbers as GLR 59. should be supplied and fitted. GOS 59. is now at Park Wards for the finish of the coachwork. Mr. Verrell was very impressed by the improvement made by temporarily altering the position of the rear seats and giving them more backward slope and he insists that this should be permanently altered.
