A lead should be taken from the positive terminal of the battery to a terminal easily accessible on the outside of the car. Normally this terminal will be shrouded with an insulated cover. Each of the four headlamps and one of the tail lamps should have a visible terminal in the wiring as near to the lamps as possible. In the event of a failure in some unknown place of the normal wiring between the switch and the lamp, a length of insulated wire with a crocodile jaw each end is clipped on to the new battery terminal and the headlamp terminal, and the car can continue running after a few seconds' delay.

For this scheme to be a success it is necessary for each wire between the fuse box and the headlamps to do only one job, so that a failure of one wire cannot put out more than one lamp.
