| X208 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} E.5/HP.27.3.32. re Bensport Carburetter. The attached scheme is not completed but shows the standard S.U. carburetter with the modification we propose for bringing the air supply from point above the throttle, and incidentally for silencing and air cleaning. The velocity of the air in the main downtake is half the speed of the air through the throttle assuming that there is no butterfly valve present; the air speed through the port ways of the air cleaner is again a quarter of the throttle air speed. The horse shoe shape cavity in the air cleaner is supposed to be filled with metal wool which acts as the cleaning agency. With the carburetter as shown the fan behind the radiator can be brought down quite low, but if we find it is possible to have the fan in a higher position we could replace some of the casting work shown with sheet metal although we have ascertained that the casting does not present any difficulties. The carburetter air valve is quite accessable as the upper casting can be removed complete by undoing the three small holes in the flange shown. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
