New unit for test with the following special features:- (1) Camshaft with extended toes Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}607. (2) 6 tappet guides in I/C. others as previous units in Alum. (3) Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}540 springs and Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}400 valve spring top washers. After running in with the 10% lard oil mixture the following tests to be carried out. (1) Find the maximum clearance at which the valve mechanism is quiet and if the tappets with the cast iron guides are any quieter than with the standard alum guides. (2) Speed at which the valves bounce. From the half period it should be O.K. to run the engine up to 4500 R.P.M. (3) Power curve with open exhaust and with silencer. By having an extra keyway out in cam adaptor check 6° early, normal and 6° late. (4) Repeat heat to oil tests as carried out on Wraith III. No.2. unit but with modifications as follows - (a) Suction pipe brought to external tank through sump base with oil cooler in line to control the inlet oil temperature. (b) Control the main oil pressure by tap in the relief valve pipe, the main pressure spring and plunger being removed. As shewn on attached drawing, by arrangement of taps oil flowing to relief can be measured. (c) Test bed cooler and filter etc. not to be connected up. continued. | ||
