Dear Sirs;
For The Attention of Mr. Whitehead.
Re Lighting and Starting Battery. We beg to advise you that on the 11th. of May last we received particulars of a very interesting test, carried out by your Mr.Clark, on a sample Battery we had despatched to you for this purpose. We accept this test as being carried out with that thoroughness and impartiality associated with your deliberations.
In considering Mr. Clarks report, it would appear that our Battery was favourable to you as regards mechanical design and manufacture, but that it was not the best battery that you had tried for giving high momentary discharges for a small voltage drop.
We ourselves have carried out very careful experimental work on the Starter Battery and in determining our design we came to the conclusion that, although we could obtain these high momentary discharges with a very small voltage drop, it was necessary to have the Plates very thin and mechanically weak, having only a comparatively short life.
We therefore decided that, providing the Battery was able to give between 500 and a thousand (1000) high momentary discharges of about 150 Amps., one after another, for a period of about three seconds, without in the meantime the battery being replenished with a fresh charge, the capacity would suffice for all practical purposes, and plates could be made of sufficiently ample
