SPECIFICATIONS
No. 4 Universal Grinding Machine
Motor Driven

CAPACITY Centers swing 14" diameter, 12¾" over water guards; take 60" length. Center rest takes work to 3½" diameter. Distance, center line of work to center of wheel spindle, greatest, 19"; least, 3½".

DRIVE Wheel spindle, headstock, table and coolant pump have individual motor drives.* Wheel spindle driven by 3 V-belts from 3 H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. totally-enclosed motor mounted on plate fastened to raised platform cast integral with wheel stand. Base plate adjustable to control tension in driving belts. Internal Grinding Fixture driven by flat belt from pulley on wheel spindle motor shaft. Headstock driven by ½ H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. motor mounted on headstock assembly, through V and flat belts. Table driven by โ…“-½ H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. 2-speed gearhead motor mounted on bracket at rear of base, through 5-step cone pulleys. All driving belts guarded. Coolant pump driven by ¼ H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. integral motor. Approximately 4 H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. required to operate machine at full capacity. All motors are of constant-speed type, for alternating current of usual frequencies and voltages.

WHEEL SPINDLE Of tool steel. Bearing surfaces hardened, ground and lapped. Self-aligning phosphor bronze boxes provided with means of compensation for wear. Hinged caps for boxes. Spindle and wheel quickly removed. Spindle takes wheels to 14" diameter, ½" to 1" thick.

WHEEL STAND PLATEN Carries wheel stand. Construction permits lengthwise and slight angular adjustment of wheel stand relative to platen. Has guide for precise alignment of wheel stand. Swivels on wheel stand slide; zero marks indicate alignment.

WHEEL STAND SLIDE Adjustable along wheel stand slide bed, which swivels on and is solidly supported by machine bed and base. Wheel stand slide bed graduated to show angular settings to half-degrees. Wheel can be used in any position without interference. Slide moves on scraped ways, one V and one flat; ways protected from grit and coolant by metal covers. Slide is counterweighted and has automatic and hand-operated longitudinal movement for wheel feed.

SWIVEL TABLE Turns on a large central stud, hardened and ground; bronze bushing provides means of compensation for wear. Table clamped at both ends. Can be set at an angle to table ways. Scale graduated to 6° reads half the included angle. Scales reading to 2½" taper per foot and 21% indicate the included angle. T-slot, ¾" wide. Also has angular T-slot for clamping headstock and footstock.

SLIDING TABLE Traversed by rack and pinion. Reverse controlled by adjustable dogs on rack at front. Dogs have fine adjustment. Table slides on one V and one flat way, scraped and adequately guarded. Ways proportioned to give large bearing surfaces. Oil distributed evenly by rollers. Table has power travel. Hand travel also provided.

SPEEDS 3 changes of wheel spindle speed: 1500, 1960 and 2410 R.{Sir Henry Royce} P. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Changes obtained by changing motor sheave. 6 changes of work speed for both dead-center and revolving-spindle grinding: 64, 102, 141, 192, 264 and 360 R.{Sir Henry Royce} P. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} (with 60-cycle A.{Mr Adams} C. motor). Changes obtained by means of change pulleys.

LONGITUDINAL TABLE TRAVEL Independent of operation of wheel spindle and headstock. Two positions of control lever provide (1) power travel with handwheel disengaged, and (2) hand travel with power drive disengaged. 10 changes in rate of power table travel: 3, 5, 7½, 10½, 11½, 15, 19, 30, 42 and 60½ inches per minute (with 60-cycle A.{Mr Adams} C. motor). Changes obtained through 5-step cone pulleys and 2-speed gearhead motor controlled by switch knob at front.

CROSS FEEDS (1) Automatic For feeding wheel to work with table traversing. Wheel feed mechanism actuated by table reversal. Range, .00025" to .004" on diameter of work at each reversal, or at alternate reversals only. Mechanism can be set to feed full amount at both ends of table travel or any part of full amount at either end. Feed automatically stopped when work is to size. Mechanism runs on anti-friction bearings; provided with means of adjustment for wear.
(2) Hand Operated By handwheel. Wide-spaced graduations read to .001" on diameter of work. Knob engages coarse hand feed (4:1 ratio) to permit rapid advance or withdrawal of wheel.

REVERSING MECHANISM Accurate. Allows work to be ground close to shoulder.

HEADSTOCK Adjustable along table. Clamped in position by T-bolts in angular slot, which draw lip on base of headstock against scraped front of table for accurate alignment. Swivels. Setting indicated by scale on base graduated in half-degrees to 100° each side of zero. Spindle hardened, ground and lapped; has tapered bearings providing means of compensation for wear. Boxes are of phosphor bronze. Spindle nose threaded, 2" diameter, 4½ R.{Sir Henry Royce} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Ntl. Std.; has No. 9 B & S taper hole. Has both dead-center and revolving-spindle drive. Quick-acting clutch, operated by lever at front, starts and stops rotation of work without stopping driving motor. Same lever operates brake for quick stopping. Height, floor to center line of spindle, 46".

FOOTSTOCK Adjustable along table. Clamped in position by T-bolt in angular slot, which draws lip on base of footstock against scraped front of table for accurate alignment. Hardened spindle slides in hardened bushings and is protected from grit and coolant. Spindle has No. 9 B & S taper hole. Spindle operated either by spring lever (with adjustment of spring pressure provided without changing angular position of lever), or by screw and knurled knob. Clamp bolt provided for locking spindle. Footstock has diamond tool holder support, for truing wheel without removing work.

INTERNAL GRINDING FIXTURE Mounted on rear end of wheel stand platen, which is turned 180° to bring fixture to front position. Maximum length of hole ground, 6"; minimum diameter, 1โ…›". Spindle runs at 15,000 R.{Sir Henry Royce} P. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}; supported near wheel by adjustable phosphor bronze bearing, and by ball bearings at pulley end. Other sizes may be substituted at no extra cost. Fixture may be left mounted in position, ready for use.

UNIVERSAL BACK RESTS For supporting slender work or splined shafts. Capable of most delicate adjustment. Automatically compensate for difference in diameter as work approaches size. Pressure on shoe automatically released when work is to size. Equipped with adjustable bronze shoes which can be quickly adjusted to different diameters. Shoes furnished take work from 1" to 4" diameter.

COOLANT SYSTEM Volume of coolant controlled by valve. Welded sheet steel tank is separate from machine and within limits of floor space. Removable baffles aid settling. Capacity, approximately 18 gallons. Centrifugal pump driven by ¼ H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} P. integral motor. Pump runs continuously when machine is running. Electrical disconnect plug provided.
