- 10 - Standard rear axle. This has remained good throughout the test, & has not deteriorated in its running qualities since beginning its test. Rear brakes & actuating shafts. Metal dirt excluders on rear actuating shafts to G.L. 152. We have no further comments to make to our previous report at the end of 7,500 miles. Petrol tank, to N. Sch. 2051 & L.O.P. E.74251. The petrol tank, except for the slight weep at rivet, previously reported, is still in good condition. We have reported our views re filling of the tank. The tank supports are quite sound at the finish of the test. There was no dirt on the filter when taken out for examination. Rear springs, bearings & shackles. The rear springs, bearings & shackles are all O.K. from an outside examination. We have had no trouble with these whatsoever. Rear "Hartford" shock absorbers, & anchorage, to L.O.P. F.71600. These have remained in good condition since our last report. The friction load has remained constant during the last 5,000 miles. Electrical fittings. Distribution board & cut-out. Reyheld cut-out contact points (gold & silver) & rigid fixed contact point D.Sch. 352. The electrical cut-out has operated satisfactorily throughout the test. The contact points have remained in a very good condition. There has been very little burning of the points. We have had no trouble with the Elliott ammeter. The Exide battery has remained in good condition & very little water has had to be added. This is, in our opinion, due to the length of time the lamps have had to be lighted. Therefore, there has been no overcharging or boiling away of the acid. There have been approx. eight hours per day when all lamps have been in use. With the exception of the headlamp wire breaking, we have had no trouble with the remaining electrical equipment. Spare wheel carriers. O.S. to N. Sch. 2023. N.S. to N. Sch. 2015. The N.S. spare wheel was lost during the last 2,000 miles, owing to the bolt holding same to bracket breaking. We have not been able to find the true cause of this. The fracture of the piece of the bolt left in the bracket shewed a clean break, which was approx. 1 1/2" from screwed end. This had so wedged itself that it has been impossible to remove it, & it will have to be drilled out. We presume that the bolt either stretched or worked slightly loose, & the tugging of the spare wheel over severe roads was the cause of the fracture. The bracket is in good condition. The O.S. spare wheel & bracket have given no trouble during the whole of the test. The spare wheel has remained securely fixed & bracket, etc. is still in good condition. | ||
