Bailey - Chief Engineer} X7238 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG10.5.28. PHANTOM. EXHAUST VALVES STRETCHING. X8230 We have examined valves out of the engine which had this trouble in France. Measurements shew that it is the head of the valve which has collapsed. From the appearance of them one would not say that they had been seriously over-heating. We have not been able to reproduce this fault at the Works. We have carried out tests on the bench running the engine at all speeds under full load conditions - we have also tried to reproduce it on the road on 12-EX car which actually gave trouble in France. The Works are already instructed as regards producing the new valve and this will be used on all cars as soon as available. Tests with other valve steels are in hand.
