To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} x1113 E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation} GR.{George Ratcliffe} Cricklewood, Sept. 18th, 1936. Stromberg Carburetter. We had Mr. Fisher down here yesterday, and went over the faults met with in service. We have more or less come to the conclusion that the cars with the weak spot at 40-50 MPH. is due to a jet not up to the standard flow c.c. per min. The jets dealt with here were opened out, so we cannot at the moment prove this point, but the next car that comes in, the jet will be taken to the Stromberg Co. and the flow will be checked. In our conversation I got to know that Austins, who use the Stromberg, check all theirs by a flow meter, and I advise that we should do likewise, as it is the only means of checking up the jet sizes. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Ratcliffe has been carrying out consumption tests with the 64 and 63 jets, also a weaker bypass jet. He will submit the result to you. We wanted a complaint to come in for the weakness at 50 MPH. but as usual not one has arrived. We have had a 30 HP in with sticking choke valve. It is chiefly due to the distortion of the housing, due to the clip holding the air pipe to silencer. The bolt in the clip can be tightened up every time and distort the carburetter. We have on this carburetter welded a piece of metal on to the steel clip, cutting down the slot gap to 1/16" so that over-tightening of the bolt cannot distort the top of the choke valve housing. [Sketch of a bolt-like component] The bolt holds the air pipe securely and did not prevent the free movement of the choke valve. We have not had a recurrent complaint of oil consumption after the fitting of the L shaped rings. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/G.W.Hancock. | ||
