X356 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY9/J4.10.27. SLIPPER FLYWHEEL. X.5300 20 HP. AND PHANTOM. X.8300 X.356 Referring to E2/M29.9.27., we are of course employing fibre for the friction discs on the new PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I design, but we do not propose to go back to fibre on existing designs because we know the trouble that we shall immediately be in. On that point there is no doubt at all. In regard to the 20 HP. we anticipate using fibre when we get your new design, but cannot do anything until the design in question materialises. In regard to thickness of fibre, we have actually specified .0625 thick. We are taking up the question of the use of woven cotton and cork, but would suggest that if cork is used, possibly the best way to utilise same would be in the form of cork inserts in an aluminium disc, as agglomerated cork has not in our experience proved itself to be reliable and satisfactory for friction washers.
