PHANTOM CHASSIS

We have been experiencing a lot of trouble with a rattle from the engine gears. This rattle is not apparent under load, but is very noticeable if the engine is accelerated sharply when running light.

I have made a test case of one engine which had this feature rather marked, and have made certain that the crankshaft bearings, gears, and all the features which may have a bearing on the rattle are as good a job as we can make them.

I have practically overcome the trouble in both this particular instance, and another case, by reducing the damping on the spring drive. This was done by using 20-HP springs, which gave about 10 lbs. load at a 3.5 radius. There does not appear to be any disadvantage in reducing the damping in any respect.

I know you are working on the problem yourself, and I thought it would be interesting at this stage to give you my views on the matter. If your conclusions are the same, I would recommend that we immediately use the 20HP Springs.

It would seem that the lowering of the slipper drive poundage has had some effect on this rattle, and that is probably the reason why the alteration is necessary.

As I find that the slipper drive itself has some bearing on the rattle, it is very necessary that this should be as good as we know how to make it, and we are somewhat handicapped in this direction as we are still using Bakelite.
