BY/Mtn5/K.{Mr Kilner} 19. 7. 28. -------------------- RE 40/50 HP SPEEDOMETERS. -------------------- Referring to your memo Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}7/M/18.7.28., we wish to point out that in our memo to ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} copy of which was sent to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and OWB. reference BY/Cgh{W Clough}7/G20.3.28., we stated that we could modify the speedometer gears in our change speed gearbox to meet the driving cable speeds which were necessary owing to the smaller instrument fitted with a temperature compensating device. We have also informed ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} in our memos BY/Cghl6/K.4.4.28., and BY/Cgh{W Clough}4/G.13.4.28., that new gears would be necessary before we could fit the small type instrument on production. We further emphasized the point that the new type instrument should not be brought on production until the Works were in a position to fit the new type gears, and this was in our memo to ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} reference BY/Cgh{W Clough}2/G.27.4.28., As we were aware that ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} had been in communication with Sales in regard to this small type speedometer, we had naturally assumed that he would inform you that the small type speedometer could not be brought on production until the Works were in a position to supply the new gears. We agree that the small type instruments are fitted in the grouped scheme, but these were not fitted with a temperature compensating device, and it is due to this improvement that we have had to modify our gears as the A.T.Co. could not fit the compensating device and give us the same cable speeds. We hope the foregoing will now make the matter quite clear, and in view of your remarks, we shall instruct the Works to bring in the new type speedometer at 'H' series providing ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} informs us that our present type speedometer commitments will allow for this.
