Rigby} Kgt A Torsionally Stiff Open Car It is difficult to make an open car adequately stiff in torsion and if ease of access and absence of internal obstructions have been given priority, it may be impossible to achieve adequate torsional stiffness without a prohibitive weight penalty. It is, however, now suggested that by suitable suspension design the effective stiffness can be very considerably increased and it seems quite reasonable to suppose that an open car could be given more torsional stiffness than an SY saloon without weight penalty. Let the basic structure be a rectangular frame, of which the sills make up the longitudinal members, with cantilever extensions to support the suspensions.
