X4338 To Wd. {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} from EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} c. to By. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} EFV4/T2.11.21. To By only. Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 's copy handed to By. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X.4338 - "GOSHAWK" ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. At a conference yesterday afternoon in Mr. Bailey's office on the subject of Goshawk electrical equipment, at which Messrs. Bailey, Hives, Swift, Haldenby and Clark were present, it was decided that electrical equipment as detailed below should be ordered or enquired for, for the 6 Goshawk chassis, one of which has been made by the Experimental Dept. and the other five of which are in progress in the works. The results of our experimental tests having indicated that in the case of the principal items, namely, dynamo and motor, the Lucas and C.A.V. machines are practically level in performance and superior to machines of other makes, it was decided that, as no R.R. Goshawk electrical equipment (except ignition equipment) was likely to be ready in time for these six chassis, three of these chassis should be Lucas equipped and three C.A.V. equipped, one of each kind of equipment being for a test bed engine. The equipment for the Lucas equipped chassis would comprise the following :- 1. A Lucas Type E.5. R.R. dynamo of the single field winding third brush controlled type, similar to sample machine recently received except that perhaps the terminal connections may be arranged by Messrs. Lucas a little differently. (On this point we have written Messrs. Lucas). 2. A Lucas 4 1/2" dia. starter motor, similar to sample machine recently received. For each machine we should at present supply, as in the case of the sample motor, armature shaft, driving end bracket, bearing plate and pinion. Contd. | ||
