Re. memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}12/JH.2.3.37.

The slack in the rear brake rope due to damage by the damper link coming adrift which was recorded in the Daily Report of the 22nd Feb.1937, was the hand brake rope, and had nothing to do with servo judders. The foot brake ropes are behind the axle and well clear of the damper connections.

All slack was removed from the foot brake ropes early in the running to try and stop the servo judders, but it made no difference. The judders were very severe and were not due to slack in the brake ropes.

For your further information, they did not come on with the first application of the pedal, but an appreciable time after braking had begun. This was emphasised by G.W.H. in the Daily Report of the 20th Feb. 1937.

The brakes are now very satisfactory, and I would like you to refer to G.W.H. for any special tests that you require.
