Outside Petrol Fillers.

We have been asked to issue Standardisation Sheets as soon as possible for the side external fillers for Ph.III and Bentley. Before doing so we should like to make the following comments.

We have examples of these on 36-MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} and 6-B-IV. We understand the reason for this type of filler is from the point of view of appearance. On both our cars petrol will regurgitate up the spout if the tank is filled too quickly. A far more serious objection in our opinion is that it is impossible to get any petrol into the tank from a two-gallon can. As this is the method one normally resorts to on running out of petrol, a customer would be very justified in complaining if he could not do so.

We know that some of our present cars are open to this criticism, but this is no reason to perpetuate the same fault. We know of no American car that cannot be filled by any method.

We consider the filler on the Vulture or 2-B-IV (Bentley's car) preferable to the side filler. This type is not free from regurgitation but nor is the proposed scheme. It has, however, no expensive syphon bellows, about which we know very little.

If S. object to the appearance of the Vulture, the Cadillac arrangement could be adapted to R.R. cars.
