Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Outside Petrol Filler -- Phantom III and Bentley. ------------------------------------------------ The outside petrol filler has been tested on B.56BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} for 10,000 miles in England and in France. We believe in no case was it found that in England the gun could not be entered into the gun rack, although very short ones, such as the old hand-operated Bowser gun, caused petrol to be blown back unless the pump was operated slowly. In France it was found that quite a number of guns could not be entered into the rack, and in particular a certain aluminium gun nozzle which is very common in that Country. In LeC.5151 herewith we show a modified cast aluminium gun rack which will pass the particular French gun in question, and will still hold the old type hand operated Bowser nozzle although at not quite such a good angle as the original rack. We suggest that this rack should be substituted for the one already instructed straight away. The inner tube of the filler has also been lengthened slightly, which should prove an advantage. On this drawing also, we show a modified method of retaining the gun rack in the filler in such a way that by unscrewing the external nut the gun rack can be removed. We suggest that this should not be adopted until it has been thoroughly tested. We confirm an arrangement with Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} that this modified gun rack shall be fitted to 6.B.IV. as soon as possible, with a view to testing its serviceability. The problem of filling from a can is improved by this filler to some extent, but we suggest that should the desire to fill from a can be seriously contemplated, the solution lies in supplying a cheap screwed-on nozzle for attaching to the can for pouring.
