GOSHAWK STEERING COLUMN X.4264.

We send herewith N.sch.1303 shewing Mr. Royce's proposal for mounting the steering column to avoid the danger of breakage due to racking from the frame.

It will be seen that the steering column is carried on a cantilever off the engine and the pull of the side steering tube is taken on a link which connects this cantilever to a part of the frame which is considered for this purpose to be rigid with the engine.

It will be noticed the crankcase is altered, and the little sheet metal bracket steadying the dashboard.

Also the control tube from the accelerator pedal to the throttle is in another place and particulars will be sent later.

We have also had to shorten the boss of the pendulum lever to clear the new bonnet stripping which is shewn.

This will not be necessary for the existing bonnet.

It will be noticed that we have pushed the support of the steering column back to get it on to the centre of the crank-case web and this slightly alters the position and angle of the steering column.

This is of course experimental, and it is understood that the production of steering columns is going on with aluminium bronze die castings. We may say that we asked the Expl: Dept: to carry out some experiments to determine the effect of the racking of the frame on the steering box. No doubt these experiments have been delayed by the lock-out, but we should like results from them as soon as possible.
