R.R. 335A (100 T) (S.H 159, 11-8-20) G 1800 X.4050 RECEIVED OCT 12 c. to Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG. 11th. Oct. 1920. Messrs. The Dunlop Co. Ltd., Aston Cross, Birmingham. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Walter Bond. With reference to the latest type straight-sided tyres which you kindly fitted to the wheels of our experimental car Tuesday Oct. 5th. We are rather disappointed to find that these tyres make considerably more noise when the car is running on the road than the original straight-sided tyres which we have tested. As you are aware, we go to a tremendous expense to overcome the slightest noise on our car. If we use tyres which are noisy, the whole affect is spoilt, it is also rather unfortunate that the noise which comes from the tyres is very similar to a noise which might come from a noisy rear axle. We have, in the past, had quite a number of complaints from customers when using new Magnum tyres with regard to the noise from their car. We have been able to demonstrate to them that the noise complained of was entirely due to the tread of the tyres. If we fitted ribbed tyres similar to the Palmer, the noise entirely disappeared. Our Sales Department in London have also complained as regards the noise caused by Magnum tyres on tar macadam roads. We have promised them that the new straight-sided tyres would be more silent, so that you will understand we are very disappointed in finding that this is not the case with the latest straight-sided tyres.
