Description: Tin-coated pistons.
Purpose: To prevent piston scuffing.
Brief Report and Remarks: Recent experiments show that by tin-coating the piston, scuffing of the skirt is avoided. This process will enable us to use any type of oil with safety and will help in reducing the time necessary to "run in" engines on test.
Have completed 40 hours endurance running with satisfactory results.

New Parts: Material £3.3.0., Total £3.3.0.

Production Position and Comments: Cost of Tools £ Nil.
Tin coating of pistons to reduce possibility of "scuffing" during "running in" process was introduced on 24th. chassis in "M" series existing stocks of Aerolite pistons being returned to makers for tin coating operation.
No tool cost is involved, but makers charge for tin coating is 3d. per piston or 1/6d. per chassis, and future pistons will be supplied already coated.
It is not recommended however, that present "running in" times for Production engines be reduced on account of impairing reliability.
Authorisation to Proceed.
Introduce on the 24 Chassis in M Series.
