Whippendell Road. WATFORD. FOR ATTENTION OF Mr. KIRBY. Dear Sirs, re. CLOCKS FOR RR. CARS. GROUPED ARRANGEMENT OR OTHERWISE. X46626 X8530 Replying to your letter on the above subject, I would like to point out that the object of our suggestion of the 10° was to get the winder handle into a position sufficiently far back for convenience. I think however this will be unnecessary with your new suggestion of adding another gear to reduce the stresses in the winder. We assume you mean to fit a steel spur pinion into a spur gear on to the winder shaft. On this pinion shaft will be one of a pair of bevel wheels, the other wheel of the pair being on the winder shaft. To make a really good job of this scheme a pair of proper bevels should be used, though the weight is considerably reduced on the teeth by this arrangement. Also I should favour one of the pinion bearings being in the plate that carries the spring barrel. The other bearing would be in the casting that carries the winder shaft, or some such equivalent arrangement in which the parts between the stresses are carried on the same piece. I send you a sketch of the arrangement here suggested. The whole winding arrangement would be like a glorified keyless watch. I trust you will be able to put the work in hand, and let us have a model by the 8th. August. The dial should be white, silvered, or cream enamelled, as instructed from Derby. I am very sorry to hear Mr. North is not very well, and hope the sea voyage will do him much good. If you are in difficulty with regard to this work I shall be in London next Monday and Tuesday, and should be pleased to see you at the Hotel Russell. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
