SECURITY BOLTS.

The earliest date we were able to arrange a meeting convenient to both ourselves and the Dunlop Co, was Thursday the 13th inst., EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} , and myself represented Rolls Royce Ltd., and Mr Paull and Mr Bond the Dunlop Co.

We put the whole of the correspondence in regard to tyre troubles which have occurred, on the table. It was carefully examined and discussed with regard to each individual case. The views expressed by the Dunlop Co, as a result of the discussion were as follows;-

In every case a tyre leaving the rim is due in the first place to a small puncture, generally masked by the large burst in the tube which takes place during the process of final failure, the burst is such an obvious fault that no attempt is made by the customer to look for any other cause. The Dunlop Company have proved beyond all dispute that a tyre cannot leave the rim until the deflation drops as low as 12 lbs. So long as this pressure is maintained it is not possible for the bead to be forced out of the clinch.

Where a small puncture exists, whether the tyre does, or does not leave the rim is generally determined by:

a {Mr Adams} /- Whether the brakes are applied on the deflated tyre,

b/- A sudden swerve is made,

c/- A corner is taken.

If all of these features are absent, the deflated tyre makes itself felt in the ordinary course and no further trouble occurs. If one or more of the above factors are present, the tyre is then possibly wrenched clear of the rim, and this will occur whether security bolts are used or not.
