This experience differs from that with certain American engines, where severe corrosion of the aluminium valve seat inserts occurred when using 7 ccs. of T.E.L. per gallon.

As a result of 100 hrs. Type Test running on T.E.L. followed by a month's storage, it appears that any effects caused by it are confined to the combustion chamber and that apart from the unpleasant appearance of the deposits, the dangers to be encountered by its use are :-

(1) Rusting of the tops of the liner bores, during storage.

(2) Pitting of the valve heads underneath the coating deposited on them.

Whether this pitting is dangerous seems doubtful, as we do not know if it is likely to develop to an extent which would definitelyweaken the valves under prolonged periods.
