COMPRESSION IGNITION UNIT. X++33

This engine has now completed a total of 23 1/2 hours running, ten hours of which was run with the original 8 to 1 compression ratio.

After fitting the 14.3 to 1 piston, no trouble was experienced in effecting an instant start from cold, without the aid of a heated water jacket or pre-heated inlet air. After 2 1/2 hrs running (the first hour under very light loads) the bronze bush (E.34749) of the small end bearing collapsed; subsequent examination pointing to insufficient lubrication as the cause. The collapse of this bush scrapped the gudgeon pin and the steel liner (E.34748), also cracked the piston pin hole. To prevent a recurrence of the above failure a pressure-fed oil supply to the small end bearing has been arranged by flooding the hollow rod with oil from the big-end and sealing the top of the rod. Since adopting this scheme the engine has run over eleven hours without further trouble.

The timing of the injection pump and the duration of the spray, for various position of the control, have been investigated by means of an oscilloscope driven off the shaft of the "Bosch" injection pump. The result of this work is shewn on V.S23. It is notided that the timing of the
