6th August. 1927. Messrs. Coley, Bentley and Kenyon and the Directors of Royce Limited. Regarding gear cutting, I recommend that for all the larger and coarser gears we adopt Sunderland system. I understand the one machine at about £1,000 will do all our work well and economically, and we ought to get going the first possible minute. I conclude we can cut with the standard cutters. Modified gears i.e. with extra addendum on pinions of low number of teeth and reduced addendum on the great wheel into which it gears. As regards the smaller gears I should keep these on the Fellows until we have proved the Sunderland system. I should purchase an option at say 5s for a fortnight getting the system proved and the Directors to vote the money; I will be responsible up to £100. In the meantime I should get a few gears out by them to get quality and times for the work, say, a heavy pair with low number pinion and a high speed pair for silence. I have pointed out that slow speed gears need not be so wide, unless crushing is feared (test should be made) also I cannot help thinking that many wheels should be steel castings with cut gears. Parkinson might know. Description of the A.C. operating Magnet, etc. is as follows - The 3 leg moving core and the stationary armature are separated through the centre say 1/8" by a delta metal strip which carries the piston of the dash pot (this acts as a guide at the bottom) and passes between two pins or rollers at the top, which make a top control and pass up for a connection to the brake lever. With 2" stroke on the brake magnet the leverage being 47 to 1 the clearance for 1" = .021. there must not be much flexibility in the parts or the stroke and clearance will be lost. With 2 1/2" or 3" face there should be very little wear. (signed) F.{Mr Friese} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce. | ||
