To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Cricklewood, June 30th, 1936. The investigation of various troubles is proceeding, and we shall shortly be able to give some definite results. I am at present waiting for the second quarters list, which I find requires a lot of sifting out, to get at the real complaints. There is quite a lot that should not go down as I find, as I did before, that useless work is being done. Take for example Shock Dampers, they have been stoning the pads of the pistons on every dampers taken down just because they show a light mark. I've cut it out. The real complaint is the inner bearing of the shaft, but more details of this I will give later. I would like to draw attention to trouble which should not have arisen on the new 25/30. Here is one that has just returned from the Continent, A Mr. Summers CUL-19. (1) Choke throttle binding closed position. (2) Oil release valve had to be taken out 3 times owing to dirt under the valve, although after the first fault, the engine oil was drained out and fresh oil added. (3) Off side rear brake seized after 1,500 miles, during hill climbing etc. in Switzerland. This the owner declared was not due to the operating shaft being tight, but insufficient clearance. (4) Oil leaked out of the joint of the filler on crankcase. Owner cured by fitting a paper washer. (5) Petrol pumps failed through all the nuts being loose holding the pump carcase to the valve unit. These nuts do not stay tight and have been reported upon from France, Waller has got the same trouble. (6) Oil leak from the Cap of the crankcase filler. Complaint general at Cricklewood; requires a stronger spring and better leather jointing. | ||
