Modifications requested by Mr. Royce for a steering box axle following a bump test.

Referring to the specimen of the above broken on the bump test, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce would like the following modifications made for a further test:-

(1) The levers carrying the cheeses should be made thicker if possible.
(2) The shaft diameter between the cheese levers should be increased if possible.
(3) The shaft should be drilled up for lightness.
(4) Try and avoid sudden changes in the profile of the cheese levers.

The effect of alteration (2) should be to make the more remote lever take a larger share of the load than it does at present.
