ORIGINAL ROYCE REALLY GOES TO TOWN ON HIS Rolls-Royce PERI I CRANK E1/M28.3.22 To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} (crossed out) from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to GJ. c. to Wer. c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ✓ PEREGRINE CRANK SHAFT. X4434 We send you herewith drawing No. LeC 1540 shewing the above. We should be glad if you would put the necessary forgings on order leaving the usual generous allowances at each end of the crankshaft. This particular style of crank is one in which the intermediate webs and the end webs are in individual balance. We send this through in accordance with our original instructions from Mr. Royce. We shall send too later also per Mr. Royce instructions an alternative type of crank in which the balancing lumps are cut off the webs and the crankshaft is balanced for forces and couplings as a whole. The oil holes in the crankpins and the journals should be as the latest Goshawk practice and if you could add this to drawing LeC 1540 before despatching the filing blue print we should be obliged. So far as we remember a hole is drilled through each crankpin from side to side at right angles to the webs and 3 oil holes are used in each journal. With regard to the balancing of the crank this is dealt with as follows:- (1) Crankpins 1,2,3,4,5 & 6 all balance each other for forces and couples. (2) The crankpin oil caps nuts and split pins all balance out. Care should be taken that the castle nuts are placed with looking glass symmetry on each side of the central main bearing. (3) The oil cap bolts all balance out with the exception that Nos. 2 & 5 are slightly longer than the others. This will be dealt with later. (1) | ||
