RE PEREGRINE REAR AXLE. X4469

We send you herewith N.sch. 1232 showing the centre box of the Peregrine rear axle.

This box is designed for bevel gears and it is realised that it may be found difficult to obtain good gears with the large reduction ratios expected in the case of Peregrine. On account of it's greater simplicity however Mr. Royce wants this axle to be proceeded with as designed, and an alternative including double reduction gear will be got ready so that it will be available in the event of the simple bevel reduction being found impracticable. The gear ratios we are expecting are 4.75, 5.25, and 5.73 to 1. It is expected that the latter one will not often be required.

It will be seen that the design of the box in all respects resembles that for Goshawk 11. except that we propose to standardise the deep groove bearing for taking the pinion end thrust.
