FIRST CHARGE.

If the battery is received in a dry condition it will be necessary to fill the cells with acid solution and charge the battery before it is put into use.

In such cases it is strongly recommended that the necessary charging should be undertaken by an experienced battery man, for instance, by a Service Agent or Depot associated with the battery maker, because unless the first charge is carried out properly the battery will never give satisfactory service.

TOPPING UP.

In the majority of cases, however, the battery will have already been charged and the cells filled with acid solution. Under normal operating conditions the level of the solution will gradually fall in each cell, mainly owing to evaporation losses. One of the most important features of satisfactory maintenance is to see that the level of the acid solution is not allowed to fall to such an extent that the tops of the separators and plates are exposed.
