R.R. Ltd. -2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/MJ.25.7.31. If we ever get an S.U. carburetter to this state and manage to convince our Chief Designer, there will be more interest in its various other applications as a downdraught etc. The two features where the carburetter could be criticised at present are - (1) Slow running. (2) Noise at partial throttle opening. We know that you are perfectly aware of both these defects. We should however, like to know whether you have done any work on silencing the carburetter itself (i.e. without a separate intake silencer), and if you know of any mehtod of good slow running that has been used with success with this carburetter. We appreciate what you say about shutting the throttle completely and using a separate slow running device, but it would help us if you could tell us what has been done previously in this respect. With regard to silencing the carburetter. If you have not done any work on this, we might do some investigation work ourselves, in which case we should want another 5/8 ins. throttle diameter Hoizontal carburetter so that we could keep one of standard dimensions whilst we alter the other. We have been running one of these models on the road and generally speaking its behaviour is very good. Perhaps you or one of your assistants would like to try the car after the Works Holidays (these finish on August 4th) to satisfy yourselves that no improvement could be made. By that time we shall have some petrol consumptions, etc. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
