X.2512 RE CONDENSERS FROM THE G.E. Co.

Referring to your memo WD{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}/Ms34/E101119 and above Company's letter of the 8th inst., I consider that what they do not grasp is, that the condensers should be tested with the fixing screws through the holes in the condenser.

It was probably not made sufficiently clear to you in the experimental department report that the breakdown was between the tinfoil and the screws passing through the condenser. If the original tests were made without the screws in position, the tests they are now talking about similarly carried out, I should anticipate they would find the condensers to be satisfactory, whereas directly the screws are put in and the load thrown on the condenser a breakdown will occur between the tinfoil and the screws.

With reference to the five standard type condensers they supplied us with, as pointed out originally, there is no prospect of us adopting these, although we will carry out some long tests on same in order to obtain any information we can as to their durability.

I would like to refer to my previous memo and urge that the extra condensers there specified should be put in hand, as it would seem there will be more further delay before the G.E.C. deliver any of the condensers they have on order.

contd.
