X231 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.3/HP.3.10.32. re Bensport Tachometer Drive. Please find herewith print of Lec.3198 showing proposed design for the above. Owing to the close proximity of the floorboards it is not possible to arrange the driven shaft in a vertical position, so the cable is brought away horizontally and should be arranged with an easy bend passing up to the dash. The low pressure oil supply to the dynamo drive shaft normally on the rear end of the rear bearing has been moved to make way for the tachometer drive gears and now feeds radially into the bearing. We think the oil feed pressure will always be in excess of the centrifugal effect in the shaft so that the front bearing will not be starved of lubricant. The driving gear has been made in one with the dynamo drive pinion and shaft, as the Tool department much prefer this to a built up construction. If the two bolter steel flange securing the drive proves unsatisfactory we can convert it to a flange having 3 bolts.
