R.R. 925A (100 T) (S.H. 738. 10-12-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2947 ORIGINAL. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} c. to Ol. c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to EX. GOSHAWK II. WEARING OF BRAKES. X4257 With reference to the wearing of the brakes. To put up a big mileage it is necessary to use the brakes more than one would naturally, and we think that with ordinary use there should be no trouble from excessive wear of the footbrake. It will be noticed that on other Goshawks used in the more natural way, the footbrakes have lasted extremely well, but again in this respect we have to strive to obtain more perfect material than the present ferrodo and we have provided a design for the damper ring which should to a large extent overcome the defect of water getting in the brakes, the design of the Goshawk in this respect being obviously on re-examination and comparison, less favourable than the 40/50 in keeping out the water. As regards adjustment we think with the 3 adjustments that we have provided for the brakes, ample range is provided for the complete wearing of the liners. We have considerably modified the design however of the Dunlop wire wheels to enable the hub to be removed with greater ease, so that the internal adjustment will be more practical as a garage operation. It certainly is not wise to make the external adjustments of greater range. R.{Sir Henry Royce} YHR | ||
