Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} RADIATORS - CHROMIUM PLATING. Lec. 2769. Continuing R1/M4.12.29., we now send you If we manage to finish the soldering leaving off the side plates, and plate in nickel, chromium, or silver, the completely soldered radiator, we can make the radiator of brass, which should be less expensive. I suggest the possibility of rendering the plates flat inexpensively by heating them to the annealing temperature, and placing them between truly flat cast iron surfaces in an hydraulic press. If this is done while they are hot the pressure required would only be a very small amount, and quite different to that needed if they were pressed cold even when annealed. This is something like hardening and flattening of steel saws. It is suggested that if the radiator is supported on stiff bars forming the edge of the tank, or the cathode, by inserting rods of stainless steel through the upper row of tubes, it would be an easy matter to fill in the electrolite until the radiator tank was completely covered and nearly touching the tubes, in which state the plating would be performed. It is suggested that we might abandon even another row of tubes to make this process possible, if the single row of tubes is sufficient. It should be noted that even if we abandon 2 rows of tubes we should still be one to the good in this high shouldered radiator. We feel sure that the appearance would be improved as the water tank would appear actually less deep than it is, and the shutters would be proportionately longer. This modification is also needed to improve the body appearance that we think it is important to get it moving quickly. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
