re. S.S. CAR. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}3/H30.5.29. With reference to the Standardisation of the above chassis, based on 19-EX as a model, although even in its present state, the chassis, taking it all round, is better than the present Phantom, the running of the car is generally rather disappointing compared with the impression I had of 18-EX when I tested it in France. Generally speaking, one cannot now complain of the front jellying, but the general sweetness of the running of the engine does not compare at all favourably with 18-EX as it was during the above test. The following are possible complaints and comparisons with the present Phantom:- S. S. PHANTOM. 1. Performance. about 10% improvement over Phantom. Engine rough pick-up - torque reaction. 17-21 aggravated by body rattles. 19-EX considered poor compared 18-EX when tested by me in France. Also 22 & 23-EX tested yesterday. 2. Engine roughness various speeds. Like crankshaft periods i.e. on test at 30,42 & 47 and above 60 on top gear. High speed engine obtained without rattles, i.e. 60 on 3rd. (22-EX similar, 23-EX less) 18-EX was quite good (per EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}'s test in France). 3. Piston Knocks cold - go off as warmed up. (23-EX O.K. understand 19-EX not latest fitted pistons as 23-EX). Tappets noisy cold, OK. when warm. | ||
