-2- The following tests to be included :- (1) Running in for new parts, noting tappet rotation and noise. (2) What is maximum clearance to obtain 30 H.P. degree of silence. (3) Power curves open exhaust and with silencer (standard 30 H.P.) at best valve timing from experience which on this shaft would be IO 4° PTDC E.O. 44° BRDC. IC 44° TBDC EC 4° BTDC. (4) Check for speed of valve bounce when springs and caps TS.540 and 541 are fitted. (5) Carry out an oil consumption at 4000 R.P.M. for 1 hr, check condition of bottom tappets before and after. (6) Check oil pressure with relief valve springs as fitted both idling and at 4000 R.P.M. at 100°C inlet. (7) Timing gears if noisy to receive attention and recommendations of Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /FJH. {Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} for quietening. (8) Check slow running at maximum clearance for quiet tappets. (9) Unit generally tuned up to be in best condition with list of parts requiring attention. Following removal of this unit refit No.2 again on the bed for further investigation. B-24 Unit. Complete preparatory tests for 15,000 miles as detailed in last memo. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Swdl. {Len H. Swindell} 12/JH.8.6.37. Since standard strength valve springs bounce on this unit with the 30 H.P. camshaft, fit a set of RS. {Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} 540/1 springs and washers also check bounce. Give list of parts requiring attention. B-17. Next unit to follow B-24. | ||
