D.W.S. JACKS - PHANTOM II.

We have for a long time been worrying the makers for an improvement to the D.W.S. jacks whereby the time and effort necessary to wind the jack down from its box to make contact with the road is reduced. Alternatively the time and effort required to return the jack to its box is at present excessive.

We are sending to you under separate cover a special jack handle which embodies features designed to overcome this defect.

The modifications consist of a second gear incorporated in the handle gearbox. This gear is very much higher ratio than the normal one.

The method of operation is to use the high speed gear to wind the jack down to the ground, then when the load increases due to having to lift the car, the handle is slipped off the jack and re-engaged with the lower gear. The same procedure, only of course reversed, is used when lowering the car to the ground and rewinding the jack into its box. The higher gear is the one at the end of the handle.

Tests we have carried out show that by using this handle the time taken to do the job is reduced by one half and the operator is also very much less fatigued. This special handle is fitted with the usual three knobs, but we are inclined to think that the third knob is no longer necessary when the two speed gear is incorporated.

We should be glad if you will arrange to have this handle put in use at Lillie Hall, as a handle for general garage use, and let us know what the general opinion on it is.

The additional cost of this in the event of standardisation will be 7/6d. per car; we are inclined to think that the advantage given justifies the increase, and should be glad to have Sales views in due course.

The finish of the gearbox casting should not be criticised as it is the first experimental handle and is necessarily rather rough.
