COPY HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, LTD. SLOUGH LABORATORY Test Report No. 1007. Date 28th January, 1937. Report of examination of a piece of Connecting Rod Bearing in R.R.56 which had seized up very badly, from Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited. This bearing was made from extruded material purchased from Messrs. Reynolds Tube Co. Limited. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS. Rolls-Royce. H.D.A. Ltd. Copper. 2.20 2.25 Nickel. .82 .84 Silicon. .50 .58 Iron. .96 1.00 Manganese. .20 .21 MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION. A specimen was cut from this bearing and microscopically examined, and revealed a rather coarse open structure. REMARKS. The Chemical Analysis indicates that in this material the Nickel content is below the desired range for R.R.56 and that also Manganese up to approximately .20% is present. The low Nickel and the presence of the Manganese suggests that there has been some contamination with a quantity of Dural, in all probability resulting from some mixing of scrap materials used. The micro structure is certainly much coarser than that of standard R.R.56 material. These features would naturally tend to have an effect upon the material from a bearing standpoint. J.T. Robinson.
