Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Sirs,

FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. R.W. HARVEY BAILEY.

In connection with our Ball Journal Cages of the type which is of the same width as the bearing; we have not been entirely satisfied in the past with the countersunk rivets and have therefore been considering some other method of effecting sufficient clearance for the ordinary snap head. We have now decided upon a milled slot running the full width of the cage and are sending for your consideration under separate cover:-

One No. 4566.
" " 4873.
" " 4544.

all of which bearings we supply to you at the present moment with the wide cage and countersunk rivets.

We are also sending one cage in the loose state so that you may see we have not in any way weakened the cross section of the cage by the addition of the side slots. We may add from tests we have conducted here we believe this cage to be an advancement on the past type, it being lighter whilst we actually find that the introduction of the slots assists in admitting lubricant between the cage and the outer diameter of the inner race.

We should be pleased to know that such a design meets with your approval, in which case we will make arrangements for your future supplies of the wide type cage to be so made.

Yours faithfully,
THE HOFFMAN MANUFACTURING CO. LTD.
(Sgd) T. W Cooper.
DIRECTOR.

P.S. We have not greased these bearings up, for ease in handling, and would therefore ask you to do so after you have had an opportunity of inspecting them.
