X.4050.- Straight-sided Tyres

With reference to the various correspondence we have had, and referring to your HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}6/LC30.4.20 in particular, we want to get down to some finality on this question of wheels rims and tyres.

We have noted the advantages of the straight-sided tyre and undoubtedly, when we can supply the straight-sided tyre, this will solve our present difficulty in regard to Warland rims. Last week I wrote to Mr. Bailey in regard to this matter and raised various queries, and when we get these clear we shall know how to deal with the matter.

What we should like to be able to say is, that from next October we shall be supplying Dunlop deatchable wire wheels, suitable for straight-sided tyres, and then set out the advantages of these straight-sided tyres. Of course, we shall have no difficulty then in persuading customers off the Warland rims. But this still leaves us the period from now to October. Therefore, what we would like to tell customers is, if this is possible, that we shall not be in a position to supply the straight-sided wheels and tyres until October next, but if they will accept our standard wire wheels these wheels could be easily altered to make them suitable for straight-sided tyres at small expense; and endeavour by this means to get them off the Warland rims. But we want you to tell us if we should be correct in saying this.

Mr. Hives introduces a new point, namely, the question of a mechanical tyre pump.
Presumably you have no mechanical tyre pump that we can recommend and therefore we should still recommend customers to carry spare wheels in order to save the time and labour of pumping up a tyre on the road. On the other hand, if you know of a reliable mechanical tyre pump that we can recommend, then we can advise customers to have this and carry only a spare cover and a couple of tubes.

We shall be glad to hear further from you upon these points.
