We have dismantled the clutch to try and find cause of its jaggering. The spring damper has been working but we cannot check the load as we have not got the tackle. The RAD fabrics gives every sign of jaggering. The surface shows high spots round each rivit and the inner fabric shows jaggering marks. There was no sign of oil any where inside the clutch. The pressure plate gives every indication of being too tight a fit in the bottom of the serrations. The clearances were:

.004" .025 .005

We are making the clearances:

.004" .025 .010"

We have checked all the bolts holding the flywheel to the crankshaft and all are tight. We did this to make sure nothing silly was happening. There is nothing we can find in the clutch of flywheel to account for the rough period. We tightened up the torque reaction dampers but got no change. We shall try the rear mounting after refitting.

GEAR BOX

Oil is coming out of the drive shaft at the front end, not a lot but it is there. You can observe when running that the drum of the synchromesh gathers the oil and builds up quite a thick rope of oil on the inner side at the front end. This covers the return hole from the drain of the case and most probably at the high speeds will not let any oil return. Investigation work on this might be usefull.

HYDRAULIC DAMPERS

The N8R that we have reported loosing oil from the screwed gland, has lost only 15 cc of oil the OSR 9cc. The poundages were O.K.
