the position of this shaft being standardised to secure interchangeability between one type of engine and another.

The Bristol Company informed us at our last Liaison Meeting that they were already making preparations to provide a universal type of gearbox mounted in the aircraft, such gearbox to be provided with alternative positions for the input drive to facilitate interchangeability. If such a gearbox could be produced, it could become a standardised article for all aircraft, instead of, as at present, each engine maker producing his own box, thus duplicating effort.

I consider that this should be looked upon as an urgent matter, to receive immediate consideration in spite of the War.

As soon as we have been into the matter, we should discuss the whole question further with the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
